What a way to close out 2024! On December 11, we held our final planting day of the year at the Purcell Reserve in Whataroa, marking a significant milestone for the Ōkārito Plant Project - 2002 plants now thriving in this remarkable piece of retired farmland!

This planting session, part of the ongoing restoration work at the Purcell Reserve, brought together an inspiring group of volunteers and supporters. Representatives from Fox Glacier Guides, Franz Josef Glacier Guides, Okarito Boat Tours, and the Okarito Native Plants Trust Nursery joined forces with Mike Purcell, the property owner, to make the day a huge success. Mike even got a head start by clearing overgrown grass from the site early in the morning, setting the stage for an afternoon of planting, weeding, and reconnecting with the land.

A Day of Planting and Storytelling

The day wasn’t just about digging and planting – we also focused on storytelling and advocacy. Zak Shaw from Development West Coast led a workshop on how to communicate the mission of the Ōkārito Plant Project to visitors. Through rain and into a sunny afternoon, we explored how our stories, our connection to this land, and our shared vision for a healthier future inspire those who visit Glacier Country. Hearing fresh ideas and perspectives from our amazing group of guides was a highlight of the day – what a passionate collective we have!

On the Ground Progress

Nearly 300 more plants were added to the growing reserve, continuing our efforts to restore native vegetation around the pond and connect the initial planting sites aroudn two stands of totara. The team also tackled vital maintenance work, clearing invasive grasses and ensuring previously planted trees and grasses have the best chance to thrive. It’s been incredible to see how this land – now part of a family trust reserve – is transforming under the care and dedication of so many.

Gratitude and Looking Ahead

A massive thank-you to all who contributed their hard work, ideas, and energy to the planting day and to the wider project this year. To the Purcell family, your vision and passion for restoring this land are nothing short of inspiring.

Here’s to more milestones in 2025, more trees in the ground, and more shared stories that connect us to the land we love. Merry Christmas, and see you all in the New Year!
